I've read your blog from A to Z, (it took me a little while, by the way) and the sailing bug stung me too, but i haven't have the opportunity to get in the sailing or marine business.
In the mean time I'm reading every single book, blog, website, or whatever i find related to sailboats.
To tell you more about how passionate I am regarding sailboats pay attention to the following:
I found on Craigslist someone who was looking for a sailing buddy, not being sure to call or not to call I asked my wife , who encouraged me to do it so.
The guy wanted to know what sailing experience I had, and I told him that I have a passion for it and the last time I had sailed was long time ago (obviously it wasn't true, it was never before).
But he accepted and we met to go sailing. At the end of my first sailing experience (that by the way it was everything as I expected) I told him the truth.
He could not believe he was sailing with a newbie and did not notice that.
He said it never happened to pass trough his mind because my sailing vocabulary was to advanced and the way I handled the sheets trough tacking and jibing mede him feel so comfortable like he was with someone experienced.
But anyway my passion keeps growing to the point of owning, building, repairing or just sailing a boat whatever my budget would allow.
By the end of this year I will move from Dallas,Tx to Fort Lauderdale,Fl so I hope I find my dream come true.
Good luck with your project and let me know whenever you circle the globe.
Jorge

Nice find. It’s doable. I do understand why you want to do it from the inside.

You have to break it down into small steps, dry fit everything, figure out your bracing, dry fit the bracing and make sure you can get it all back into place once you’re putting it up for good. Pics of the bracing dry fit in place help a lot when you’re working under a time constraint.

It is definitely a multi-step operation. Don’t even think about putting the inner skin up until the new core is glued in place, faired and sounded for voids.

If I had to do it over I’d cut the outer skin, and either spend a lot of time fairing, or put down Treadmaster. Unfortunately, there's no way to make that work very conveniently; you can't get the chain from the pointy end to some other storage place without bodily moving it. Obviously, that doesn't work.

Chain doesn't run well through pipes unless they are nearly vertical; hence the problem with stowage anywhere but directly beneath the bow. Curvy chain leads and pipes have been tried by many, yet nearly never successfully. Chain resists all attempts to be made to travel any distance in anything but a vertical direction.

Anchors need to be on the bow for convenience; otherwise you can store them anywhere they fit, but they won't be convenient to use. Anchors are important on a cruising boat; ergo, they end up stored on rollers on the bow where they're always ready to go at a moment's notice. That's where you deploy anchors; that's where they end up being stowed. Ideal from a weight perspective? Of course not. But what can you do? Usability has to rule the day a lot of the time.

There are enough real and as-yet unforseen problems to be dealing with as you rebuild the boat. Stick to the things you can actually improve, and where it makes sense to try--and don't look to improve everything when you don't have the benefit of your own experience that might dictate a major change. Sometimes, you need a chance to see how things work for yourself before you can make an informed decision about what might work better. A person never gets the "ultimate" boat on their first try: you just don't always know what needs improvement till you've been out there a while. Be careful about continually trying to reinvent the wheel, as it were. Lots of people before you have determined that certain things work pretty well in their conventional forms. Use that historical and collective experience to your benefit, rather than always looking for a "better" way.

You're not the first to wish for a better way to store chain, but the physical limitations of the boat, particularly one as small as a Triton, and all the other physical factors at hand that govern how chain moves and work, simply preclude any other sort of storage system. Many things have been tried by many people, few with any real success. Convention usually exists for a reason.

Want less weight? Use less chain. Rope-chain rodes are perfectly fine. But if you want all chain for its longevity and much-touted ability to better withstand the abrasive quality of coral and coral sand, should you go to the tropics, then you must decide to accept the weight inherent with its use. And that weight will end up in the bow.

You've chosen a relatively heavy boat that can withstand excess weight very well without significant loss in performance. By the same token, you're not going to be able to significantly improve performance by "lightening" the boat. Do what you can to keep the excesses out, but if you want to obsess and truly save weight, you ought to be starting with a different boat in the first place. I'm not suggesting that weight concerns shouldn't enter into the equation, but you need to keep it in perspective also.

Hey Zach,You probable found what the Sea Swing bul...

Hey Zach,

You probable found what the Sea Swing bulkhead fitting looks like, but here is a link to a picture on my blog.

http://knockaboutsloops.blogspot.com/

Just search for Sea Swing.

I noticed that you are also posting on the oar club forum. It's just a better choice for this sort of work. Yes it costs more. The bones of your boat aren't where you want to start compromising purely for the sake of cost. Epoxy is stronger and bonds much more strongly in a repair application, period. That ought to be good enough reason to use it.

You'll find countless situations as you proceed where you need to balance cost against benefit. Often, the choice comes down to personal needs and compromises, but cutting cost in favor of using inferior (for the application) materials is just the wrong way to go about it, in my opinion.

You're putting a lot of thought into this boat.
